Gemmotherapy: The Science of Healing with Plant Stem Cells

Harnessing the vital energy of plant buds for detoxification and rejuvenation

• The uses and healing properties of 34 tree and plant buds, including hawthorn, maple, and lilac

• Catalog of more than 30 common ailments and their remedies

• Resources for obtaining the remedies and preparation guidelines

Gemmotherapy–the medicinal use of plant buds and young shoots–harnesses the healing power of trees and shrubs at the peak of energetic activity in their annual cycle, capturing powerful nutrients, vitamins, plant hormones, and enzymes. Perfect for combatting the unavoidable amount of pollutants we encounter in modern society, gemmotherapy is primarily aimed at draining the body of toxins and acts by gently stimulating and promoting elimination. The potency of these plant “stem cells” also enables gemmotherapy remedies to treat far more ailments than just those for which these plants are prescribed in traditional herbalism. This therapy can be used to treat many common conditions, such as asthma, osteoporosis, kidney stones, and anxiety, and is especially effective at alleviating allergies.

This book describes the gemmotherapeutic uses and healing properties of 34 trees and plants, including hawthorn, maple, lilac, as well as covering the history and biological foundations of gemmotherapy. It contains a catalog of more than 30 ailments with in-depth remedy protocols, a resource section, and detailed information on how gemmotherapy extracts are prepared. An adjunct to both traditional herbalism and homeopathy, gemmotherapy offers an all-natural path to detoxification and healing with no side effects.

Healing the Brain

In May 1995, neurologist Curt Freed began one of the most dramatic experiments in the history of medicine: the attempt to treat sufferers of Parkinson’s disease by grafting human stem cells into their brains.

Of the forty patients who volunteered for Freed’s new treatment, half underwent authentic surgery. The other half, who had received placebo surgery, felt their last hope dissolve into bitter frustration. But the hardest road lay ahead for those who had been given the highly experimental procedure. Healing the Brain captures the emotional events that unfolded in the months afterward as Freed, his researchers, and their courageous, desperate patients awaited the outcome and witnessed a moral debate unfolding across the nation over embryonic stem-cell medicine. Would the brain regenerate itself or reject the new cells? This pioneering team was willing to take perilous risks to find out.

Healing the Brain is a moving, fascinating narrative about discovery and disillusionment, conflict and compassion, suffering and — for some — amazing success.

Convinced that drug therapies based on dopamine replacement would never fully relieve the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, Dr. Curt Freed instead cut to the core of the matter–quite literally–and explored ways to replace damaged neurological systems caused by the disease. Healing the Brain meticulously chronicles his development and testing of a controversial surgical method, in which microscopic “noodles” of fetal brain tissue were implanted in the brains of suffering patients.

Fueled by major funding from the National Institutes of Health, Freed conducted the first double-blind fetal cell transplant study–a project involving 40 patients and spanning an unexpected five years (1994-1999). He hoped to show that such transplants would help the brain heal by repairing critical pathways that appear damaged in Parkinson’s patients.

To some degree, he succeeded. Throughout this vivid account, Freed and coauthor Simon LeVay carefully outline the history of Parkinson’s, treatment successes and failures, and all the players (patients, politicians, and fellow researchers) in Freed’s fight against this progressively degenerative disease. While most of the text reads easily, the surgical accounts will challenge queasy stomachs; every action and reaction (by patient, doctor, and equipment) is recorded here. Most compelling, however, is Freed’s insight into the disease itself and his confidence that science eventually will provide a cure. –Liane Emory Thomas
